A call for crewmen portraits

For almost 50 years Norwegian crew members dominated the yachts competing in America’s Cup and other regattas, many of whom from Tysnes. Last December the Tysnes yacht sailor museum released an online listing of more than 100 of them, inviting descendants to provide pictures and additional information, if available.

“As of mid-January 2025 we have managed to acquire photographs of 31 out of the approximately 109 crewmen we have listed, but still need pictures of the remaining three quarters or so,” says Mr. Hans Ole Dalland, chairman of the museum, encouraging Norwegian and American descendants alike (or descendants anywhere else, for that matter) to submit pictures from family albums – or framed on a wall, adding:

“So far we haven’t been able to translate the listing into English, but will get around to that as soon as we have gathered more pictures from friends and supporters abroad, which is what we’re hoping to achieve by reaching out this way”.

(For all we know your ancestor(s) may already be listed – and depicted!)

Also, Mr. Dalland is very interested in completing information pertaining to existing listings – and crew members missing from the list:

“We have to admit that the information we have gathered thus far may be incomplete, and would very much appreciate additional details,” he concludes.

Late edit: In a few cases we have obtained both names and photographs, but haven’t succeeded in acquiring further details, such as name of yachts, function and duration of engagement, so any information would be much appreciated.
